Clean Solutions: Floating Waste Water Treatment

Fri, November 27, 2009

This floating waste water treatment facility, invented by Ivan Vesely, Director of the Czech Oceanographic Society, could help clean up Alaska villages (even big ones, like Anchorage) by filtering discharge that typically just dumps into Cook Inlet or a nearby bay after passing through a settling tank. (I know, we were shocked to find out, too, just how primitive our sewage treatment facilities are.) Maybe, if it was adapted to wetlands or... (think of other ways to fend off ice.) Upgraded the batteries to NiMH. It now takes 4 cycles to charge them, but they also last 4 times as long as the old batteries and the power curve is fairly flat. Couldn't find a schematic for the strange video connector (or even a plug to fit it), but managed to find the video outputs and use it as a webcam with some trial and error (8 pins: only 56 [7*8] possible combinations of 2 wires to try). Select "composite" input on the TV card software (I'm using xawtv here.) Eventually, I would like to get around to removing the IR filter and making it night vision capable.

Stolen last night. We actually don't care too much, but we don't want to encourage stealing either, so we will happily take $200 cash as payment. Small price for a clear conscience.

Our holidays are evolving: I filmed these giant bugs during the day, while they were apparently sleeping. I may have to bar my door tonight. Remind me to get some raid in the morning! To avoid problems with trick-or-treating, the nephews have been making candy-filled monsters out of recycled cardboard, plastic bottles. Tomorrow, with toy weapons in hand they will do battle for town and country and win us some tasty treats! The full music track can be downloaded from my site. It's called Haunted House. Caution, scary! http://mixculture.org I do not have a 3D camera. All I have is one camera to work with. So how did I make my video 3D? Simple, by altering time, of course! Credits: cardboard critters by my Bro Bob and my 5 nephews. Music by me! I'm too old to post unauthorized stuff and get away with it. 巨大なバグYouTubeの破壊 巨大破坏YouTube上的错误 This video is licensed under the Creative Commons License. Please allow me to show you why I think Scite is the ultimate power editor and IDE of choice for Java programming, PHP, C or any other programming language. Unfortunately, it seems like nobody knows know how to set up Scite properly for programming on GNU/Linux (also available for Mac and Windows 7) and the default installation is crippled. If your call tips, keyword highlighting and symbol completion aren't working as intended, just download my configuration files. (The Nerd Show is not affilated with SciTE. Not affiliated with Windows 7 either, for that matter.) http://www.thenerdshow.com/index.php?page=scite "I like Windows 7 and I'm a let you finish installing, but GNU/Linux got some of the best free and legally copyable software of all time!" Comment, rate, subscribe. Follow us on twitter. Just some thoughts about the dangers of inventing in a suburban neighborhood, a little more info about our concept craft, antigravity, BiefeldBrown effect and pseudoscience. Be careful out there, folks. Real anti-gravity may indeed exist, but please understand thenerdshow.com must hastily debunk because playing with ion wind type craft using extremely dangerous high voltage could easily kill someone. Imagine crashing into or even just touching one in operation. Not good. Not good at all. X_x We are working on a totally different, much safer method of propulsion, but we don't have the kind of money to make it consumer-ready. It's kind of scary to think that somebody might be inspired by our creative musings to risk their life, or possibly somebody elses, and go sailing across the country irresponsibly over populated areas, without following FAA guidelines for safety, experimental aircraft or even just plain common sense. We had to make this video to kind of distance ourselves from just that sort of madness. Media newsers are always finding ways to make inventors look silly, strange, dangerous, or even outright insane. We're not like this guy. Real research is happening by real inventors and scientists. There is no secret science happening in our garage here. It's all out in the open, on video and in published, peer-review literature. What upsets us can become our greatest source of joy. Out of the very ashes of the past, a new day is born! It's quite a trick, but if you can change your mind you may just realize some of your enemies really aren't. Since everyone we think of is just a thought, we can change them instantly. Take those people you don't like and make them dance. Take the feelings you don't want and rick roll them, turn them into a source of joy. Don't like your leaders? Make them dance! It's YOUR OWN energy that is in conflict. TAKE IT BACK! This video is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 Generic license. The door is open today for the few who get it to lay claim to the destiny that is theirs. An idea that is so obvious and yet so unheard of it may just astound you... In the age of Television some of us lost sight of who we were. Afraid to go out, we longer knew our neighbors. We did our conversing in secret, brushing off strangers on the way to work, endless boring work. In the future age of connectedness, someone might even wonder what kind of crime it was to share our love and our stories with only a select few when the world was at our fingertips. Who are we? What are we doing in this life and why? Where are we going from here? These are things nobody in the world knows about us. That makes us the internet's greatest secret! So much wisdom and culture already lost forever, but what about today? With everything coming from overseas, what services and products do we provide? How can we take back what is ours? It's time we started sharing what we know, even if only so that future generations don't wind up like us! How to be successful on the internet: 1) Get an online presence. Establish yourself online 2) Work with a community or build your own 3) Support with ads, books and merchandise 4) Subscriber content: Keep them coming back 5) Advertise or promote your network This video is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 Generic license. http://thenerdshow.com Tiny C program for fast, color-based simultaneous tracking and targeting. Keeps track of multiple objects for markerless optical motion capture (mocap), gestures, character animation and targeting. Should work on live webcam feeds with no external libraries or dependencies. The algorithm we came up with is a very simplistic and efficient synthesis of blob and kernel-based tracking methods analogous to a bastardization of bayesian probability calculus with Bhattacharyya coefficients; it makes more sense on screen than in print. ;) Right now we don't have a live cam, so we're using ffmpeg libraries avcodec / avformat to unwrap the various video codecs and gain access to raw video frames in files like.avi, .mpg and .mov. Outputs a list of tuples or a video stream containing markers.

Let's take a look at what happens to our function when we compile it with compiler optimizations enabled. What is optimized code? What is function in-lining? See how the gcc compiler strips off the CDECL calling convention wrappers (stack push call and ret instruction overhead) and embeds our functions code directly into main() when we enable the gcc optimize for size flag, -Os. This is just one of the many, many optimizing steps a compiler might do. We can also tell it to unroll loops, or ...

Balloon Boy: "We did this for the show"

Watch video

Transcript: (Kroll, 2009)

Hi it's been a busy week and it's time to do another radio show. To recap the events that unfolded recently, the nation watched helplessly as a little boy flew solo cross-country in a makeshift balloon shaped like a UFO. Yeah... that's about what it looked like, or so we thought. That was until everyone's prayers were answered when it was discovered he was safe...

Abstract

Bias has been detected in a video, Declinining Fish Stock, (2007), which is used as a resource to educate university students. The bias occurs in the way that the opinion of Pete Dupuis, a commercial fisherman (uneducated?), is contrasted with the interview of Jeremy Jackson of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography...
